History
In the area there are remains of Roman baths. These mineral-medicinal waters were used until the Middle Ages. At the beginning of the 20th century a thermal spa was built, which was flooded as a result of the building of the Castrelo de Miño reservoir. The current thermal spa, opened in 2001, is a completely glazed building, inspired by the flight of a seagull, designed by the architects Chaos and Garaizabal.
Enjoy the surroundings
The town of Laias, part of the Ribeiro region, is located in the local council of Cenlle, on the banks of the river Miño. Most of the cultivated land is dedicated to vineyards. The parish and its surroundings offer multiple possibilities, both from a cultural perspective and for its natural environment, offering recreational areas, hiking routes, and bathing areas.
This territory was occupied before the arrival of the Romans. At that time it was famous for extracting gold nuggets from the river Miño. Today, the hill fort of San Cibrao de Lás, one of the largest fortified villages in the process of excavation located throughout Galicia, is still preserved. It has a visitors centre on the hill fort culture. Another archaeological site is A Cova da Moura.
The historical-artistic site of Ribadavia is only 8 km away, with its castle belonging to the Sarmiento family, its Jewish quarter, its churches and its ethnological museum. This medieval town is a perfect destination for lovers of nature, history, culture and gastronomy. As the capital of the Ribeiro region, visitors can enjoy its tasty wines to accompany the local gastronomy.
Ribadavia offers the possibility to enjoy aquatic activities such as canoeing, rowing, sailing, or windsurfing, in the river Avia or in the Castrelo de Miño nautical park. There are also catamaran routes along the Miño, together with hiking trails along mythical medieval routes such as the "Wine and Romanesque History Route," climbing, and horseback riding.
Visitors can take a tour of the entire region of O Ribeiro, contemplating landscapes of great beauty, Romanesque churches, manors, medieval villages, and traditional wineries, without forgetting a tasting of the wines that are so typical of this region.
