History
Its Roman origin is attested to by the numerous artefacts found during the excavations carried out to improve the spring. The thermal spa has been in operation since 1873, when the building was built on the banks of the river Arnoia, with a stone façade, restored in 2005. Throughout the 20th century, the thermal spa hotel was extended on numerous occasions, but without losing any of the charm of the traditional structure. Today it still conserves some of its furnishings from the 1920s.
Enjoy the surroundings
The municipality of Baños de Molgas in Ourense is the gateway to the Ribeira Sacra. It is very close to the city of Ourense, only 34 kilometres away.
Its monumental heritage includes a Roman bridge with a single arch, as well as rock art and cup marks. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Miracles, declared a National Historical-Artistic Monument in 1982, is very interesting due to its baroque construction from the 17th century. The pre-Romanesque chapel of Santa Eufemia de Ambía, dating from the end of the 9th century and also declared a Historical-Artistic Monument, has surprising Mozarabic details on its windows.
The town is located in the valley of "O Medo" and is surrounded by three rivers: the Tioira, Sor and Arnoia, the largest of the three. It stands out for its wooded areas, forest walks, and the swimming pool area, all within a rural setting.
The recreational area of Parque Ansuíña has a special charm, a remarkable spot for its natural beauty and the number of alders that populate its banks. It has well-kept spaces for walking, and a very large area for barbecues, with stone tables and a cafeteria. It also has tennis courts and municipal swimming pools. The river Arnoia is a perfect spot for fishing lovers to catch trout, which are very abundant in these waters.
The beautiful village of Allariz is only 20 kilometres away, which offers an opportunity to visit its perfectly preserved historical centre. The project to completely restore the historical-artistic site of Allariz and the river Arnoia won it the European Town Planning Prize in 1994.
In addition, the ecospace of O Rexo is one of the artistic reference points of Galicia, the work of Agustín Ibarrola. Trees, stones, granite blocks and other natural elements were painted by the Basque artist, resulting in an unrepeatable work of art in the open air.
