History
The Benedictine monks of the Monastery of Carboeiro, apparently, already used the mineral-medicinal waters of A Brea. There are also references to them from the Baroque period, although their fame would not become widespread until the end of the 19thcentury, when the baths received about 400 people a year. In 1991 the current thermal spa hotel was built, which was thoroughly refurbished and extended some years later.
Enjoy the surroundings
The municipality of Vila de Cruces in Pontevedra is located in the centre of Galicia, in the region of Deza. It is only 22 km from Lalín, 39 km from Santiago de Compostela and 67 km from the city of Pontevedra.
A Solaina de Piloño is the old "Casa do Ferreiro" (Blacksmith's House), an old restored house and now the town's house-museum. The centre, which periodically brings together painters, draftsmen and sculptors, is the main cultural reference point in the area.
The birthplace of the writer Xosé Neira Vilas is located in the parish of Gres, now converted into a house of culture. It also houses an ethnographic museum.
Very close to Bandeira (Silleda) is the Fervenza of the river Toxa, a waterfall of great beauty and scenic value, and said to be the highest in Galicia, which falls around 60 meters. Located in completely natural surroundings, is one of the most beautiful hidden places in the region.
The monastery of San Lorenzo de Carboeiro is a remarkable historical treasure bathed by the river Deza. Its church is considered one of the greatest examples of the ogival Romanesque style in Galicia. Visits are free of charge.
Visitors can also discover the old tungsten mines, located in a wild, rocky landscape that has served as the setting for several film productions.
The most typical oak groves in Galicia stand on the banks of the river Arnego, where there is a forest that also abounds in cork oaks. In addition, the river, rich in trout, offers some of the best fishing reserves in the province.
The recreation area known as A Illa de Gres is a spot formed by six artificial islands, five of which are linked by small footbridges. Nearby is a Roman bridge with eleven arches and a mill.
The riverside beach of A Carixa, in the parish of Merza, as well as being an ideal place for bathing, has a recreation area with a picnic area and a restored mill nearby. A bio-healthy park has been created in the surrounding area.
For lovers of water sports, rafting can be enjoyed in the rivers Arnego, Ulla and Deza, and rowing and canoeing in the reservoir of Portodemouros
